Markman (1981) completed a survey transect in the Miahuatlán Valley, where small-scale excavations and a reconnaissance had previously been conducted by Donald L. Brockington (1973). Three mountainous areas that abut the valley also have received full archaeological survey coverage. Although most houses and other buildings are no longer standing, terraces are still readily visible on the surface, and we used them as our basic units of data recording when we carried out the systematic surface survey of the site (Blanton 1978).
